Half of a Great Idea
🕑 Added 2024-05-09 14:00:12 +0000 UTCHow have I managed to avoid this core component of a machinists’ repertoire for so long? The time has come… for gears. But I like making tools a lot more than I like making not tools. So before I can make any gear, naturally, I need to make the gear cutter. Which requires making a few other tools, too. So many tools, in fact, that it will take me two videos to finish this project. And maybe by the end of this adventure I will properly be able to say "Eureka!".
Enjoy!

I'm not exactly sure how I came across the first video of yours that I watched but after watching it I binge watched every single video that you have. I love your videos very much and I can't wait to see part two of this one keep up the awesome work you're amazing.

Unrelated to the video post - I am sure I'm very silly for asking if you've seen Breaking Taps' videos, but specifically have you watched the slow-mo shots of what Chatter looks like in this video around 3:20? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aog0syGaZzQ This was crazy to me - watching the work piece and the vice jump around like it's on a trampoline is nuts! It makes me wonder if something extremely big and heavy holding something tiny would reduce or eliminate this effect - like what's the ratio of masses between workpiece and vice / holder setup that eliminates chatter? Is it always "bigger is better"? If more mass does help, is it on a linear or an exponential curve where it stops mattering after a certain point? So many questions.

I got one from Amazon for under $50. I don’t use it everyday, but it’s super nice when I do use it

I have! And im definitely tempted to get one 😂

Lol, murder noodles.

Hey Brandon! Have you ever seen an air-powered deburring tool? They would make adding chamfers to certain round parts much easier

I do love torsion bars . . .
Brandon Sander
Thanks Mike. Oh yeah, somewhere at the end of this is some more Hardinge restoration. Gonna be a while to get there though haha The second half of this build has another spring that weirdly is a true round torsion spring unlike the first. Maybe the designer just wanted to mix it up!? Haha

Thanks, Jim! Being a dad and all I might have to pick that one up too!

If you want a real surprise don’t look this one up. When it’s in action it’s absolutely mesmerizing!

Don’t forget spinny!

She without a doubt makes everything better. Including me! Thanks, Jose

My pleasure!

Good RoI from Patreon this month. My inability to move sofas uphill eventually led me to wanting to make my own gears (the mission creep is real) and this has convinced me I should never even think about hobbing my own gears. Also, I have nightmares about flat springs, especially in ratchets, *especially* when some super smarty welds them in place, so . . . I guess that round spring is a reasonable alternative?

Man you are nailing the Dad jokes while doing your outstanding machining. BTW, I enjoyed reading If You Give A Mouse A Cookie to my kids log ago.

Christ on a bike, that ratcheting action is beyond satisfying 😁 Definitely didn't see this one coming, very intrigued to see it finished!

Clicky things 🙌

If you give a machinist a cookie, he'll ask you to get him raw wheat in two weeks after he's a had a chance to make a millstone.

This was great! Looking forward to the rest

Great project! Love the participation of your wife (works for CEE) and makes you even more likeable that you already were. Keep the good work!

It’s been a long day and it’s not lunch yet. Knowing I have a new vid to watch when I get home from work has put a new spring in my step! Thanks Brandon
Brandon Sander
Thanks! Those bits helped the video go a bit more smoothy too 😂

Awesome video, great timing on the obvious right size “findings” 🤣 great chemistry with the boss too! Right mix of entertaining and technical!
