Hey guys... I got LATHED
🕑 Added 2023-11-23 15:00:07 +0000 UTCSo... something kinda big and most definitely ridiculous happened this past week. I won't give away too much but it's kind of a dream come true. And I now have A LOT of work ahead of me!
Enjoy and Happy Thanksgiving!

Nice! You can still get new rotary phase converters but they aren't the cheapest ($500-1000). I had some people suggest that it was possible to use a single VFD in cases like this machine. Their argument was that all the other smaller motors wouldn't affect the VFD while the main motor is running. I don't know how legitimate or safe of an installation that is but might be worth looking into

nothing at all π two lathes is better than one!

I missed something... what's happening to your old lathe?

I'm in the process of ordering a TML-5Cst, a yet-another Hardinge HLV replica, but scraped and tuned and tricked out by Babin Machine. Anyway, I literally had to rewire, re-air, and make a home for it in my garage-turned-shop: Your video followed my experience almost exactly. Uncanny. Anyway -- I also need a phase converter -- if you didn't have that old rotary one, what would you have used? I could run this on a single phase at suffer the 3hp or get the phase converter to run all three and get the full 5hp. btw, I've never owned a lathe before, only (cnc) mills :-D So it would be helpful to me if you were a little more expansive on your techniques so I can learn like all modern folk do -- by watching our favorite youtube stars (-:

Thanks Jeff! Definitely a LOT more to come π

Congrats on the new crew member! All the best!
Jeffrey Spoor
Another great story Brandon, I look forward to more soon as always!

Craig is the kind of guy you only hear about in legends haha Thanks and Happy belated Thanksgiving to you too!
Brandon Sander
Welcome! And thanks so much for the support. I've noticed the same gap in content doing my own research haha Hopefully I can get it all right along the way. Good luck with your own restoration and Happy belated Thanksgiving to you as well!
Rvator
Awesome there are people like Craig in this world. A great addition for IM but also for we fans as well! Happy Thanksgiving!

Hi, just joined your patreon, I recently bought my first lathe a narrow bed Hardinge HLV-BK that needs some TLC. There is a huge market for good Hardinge HLV type content, basically untapped. Canβt wait to see what you accomplish with yours! Happy Thanksgiving!
Brandon Sander
It's fun to use too! I just end up losing track on time on it π Thanks!

Congrats on the new Lathe! But also, MORE SURFACE GRINDER VIDEOS! that things is so fun to watch!

I believe the EVS is Electronic Variable Speed. There are a number of different branded, high quality Taiwan made Hardinge copies. Sharp, Feeler, Royal, Acra, Victor, to name a few......I would suspect that all were made by a small number of factories and then painted/badged appropriately as they left the factory, and to the degree of quality that was spec'd by the vendor. Hopefully, yours turns out to be a good one! You may want to check out Robin Renzetti's ( ROBRENZ ) YouTube channel, if you haven't already. He has several episodes that concern making improvements to, and efficiently using a Hardige lathe.
Brandon Sander
I wondered what that EM stood for! I think you are right. There is a comparable model called EVS as well
Brandon Sander
yeah... I'll probably need a die holder too... π I might have to whip a ball turner up at some point even though I have an idea for a more elaborate design. But both is good too π
Brandon Sander
Thanks, PJ! Nope, no collets but I fortunately already have the full imperial set for my other lathe so good there. Happy Thanksgiving to you too!
Erik D. Radzius
Hmm.. Looks like there's a hex button screw that's sheared off.. If only you had a rotary broach that could replicate it.. π Although looking at the handles I'm now wondering if I should've sent you the spherical turning attachment instead π Can't wait to see all the projects you have planned for this amazing machine. I'm sure you'll give it the treatment it deserves.
PJ
Happy Thanksgiving and Thanks for Giving Santa Craig!! Happy and Grateful to see this saved, appreciated and put to use. Thanks for the Happy Thanksgiving Video, Brandon. Did you get collets with it too?
Jeff Loffert
That should be a great lathe for small and/or precision work. Assuming the EM in the model number means both English and Metric threading, which is a big plus!
Michael Faragher
I hadn't even thought about the implications for threads! Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours as well!
Brandon Sander
I can't say a bad thing about the guy π Yeah that quick retract is such a nice feature for things like that. And not having to mess with a thread dial is great! Happy Thanksgiving!
Brandon Sander
Thanks Jeff! Funny enough a 10EE is Craig's dream lathe. Maybe one day I can repay the favor! Happy Thanksgiving to you too!
Brandon Sander
Thanks, Chris! I'm looking forward to getting reacquainted π
Brandon Sander
He sure does! He's given me samples of some of the Crucible tools he makes (and designed). Small world indeed! Happy Thanksgiving to you too!
Michael Faragher
I don't know lathes, but I know excited machinists! That quick back and forth for clearance seems like a great feature, too. Glad to see you get it, and good on Craig for being a good guy.
Ralph McCoy
Happy Thanksgiving!! Craig makes tools for Lost Art Press. Small world
Chris Barry
Love the shop improvement, machine sorting videos and a Hardinge is an awesome piece of kit.
Jeff Loffert
Congrats, and Happy Thanksgiving! That'll be a great addition. A Hardinge/Clone or a 10EE would be about the ultimate "second lathe" to have in a shop.
