Broken drills and end mills simply become shorter versions of themselves or lathe tools.

Rogan Creswick

I've been following Gandyworks for a while, hoping to see more about the machine itself; I can't wait to see what you build! I was always enthralled by the pendulum harmonographs, but we don't have space for one, but Gandy's work (and similar) look more compact...

Brandon Sander

That's what I'm looking forward to! The sky is the limit as far as mechanisms to design and implement. I can basically just keep making more and more movements and see how they translate to the final drawings!

I served as a weapons systems engineer and some of our guided systems were still using “knitted” programming for the ground based guidance system, while at the same time we were introducing one of the most iconic tank busters of recent years and we were developing a new ballistic computation system for artillery. A fascinating job dealing with everything from blunt objects to cutting edge tech.

To say I’m excited about this is a gross understatement. I’ve always been fascinated by Spirographs, so I’m very curious how you tackle this idea which, by the sounds of things, will border insanity in terms of design and making 😂

Brandon Sander

The cube is nothing so practical 😂 I recall seeing a video recently about the purely mechanical integrator machines that I think were used in those fire control systems. The basic functionality was so simple and elegant. I imagine once you get into multivariable applications like that it gets pretty nuts through. I love purely mechanical everything.

Brandon Sander

Hey! I found this guys a while back as well. I like his stylistic design choices a lot and they way he experiments with different mechanisms. I've definitely gotten some inspiration from his designs.

Brandon Sander

My pleasure, Jose!

Brandon Sander

I usually hold onto those for mid catastrophe snacks 😁

Brandon Sander

I'm in love!

Brandon Sander

Yes! I came across Robert as well. And @jenslabsbuilds. Both using similar machines.

Trevor Flowers

This YT creator makes interesting gravity powered escapement mechanisms and I've daydreamed a bit about machining a wall-mounted espresso machine with a similar vibe. If any part of that catches your fancy then please feel free to run with it. I may never get around to doing anything with it. https://youtube.com/shorts/LRgS7-r5ix4

Thank you for the update! Looking forward to those projects!

Does the BoD get fed broken end mills?

Michael Faragher

Hard to tell what's going on with that cube. Maybe some kind of hydraulic manifold? It reminds me of a story a professor of mine told. He was an old Navy guy, the blue-water kind, not the slacks kind, and like engineers do, he was fascinated by pre-electronic fire control computers. They were boxes of purely mechanical components, so dense you couldn't stick your finger inside even if you wanted to lose it, that could perform complicated, real time multi-variable calculus. The amount of math to define these systems, then the engineering to design them, and the machining required to produce them were all things of legend. IIRC, the Iowa's mainguns had an anti-aircraft mode. All without a single transistor or, I do believe, tube. All mechanical systems. So impressive. Anyway, looking forward to the harmonograph! After seeing what images can be made using Fourier epicycles, I can only imagine the fun you're gonna have.

Oh, yes! A gandyworks machine!

I'd like to mention a few other artists in that space: Robert Balke: https://www.instagram.com/robertbalke/
