I am now super curious as to what was done differently between previous heroes and the current hero that allowed the hero to save him.

Well, since Pinkie wasn't in the attack party, I guess when they get back to town there's going to be a massive "So glad to meet you!" party waiting for them. (What, you don't think the Pinkie Sense wouldn't have already clued her in on this outcome? She probably started setting things up for it as soon as her friends left the village in the first place.)
