Essentially, it's like a codeword or safe word system for a quick check-in. Usually done much like traffic lights: Green is good to go/continue, Yellow is caution/slowdown/pause, Red is a hard stop. But people can pick other colors that mean certain things to them to make their own unique system. I've seen it done for comfort level of physical touch in general by asexuals and those with sensory issues. Communication is key :>
