It started its life inspired by Silver W King's DBZ SI, and then I saw the first season of "Eminence in Shadow," and was like, "Okay, let's take the concept of a character who is manipulating things from the background for a greater good and play it straight."

Huh, fair enough! Yeah, 15 seems about right. Makes me wonder if he went through a goth/ emo phase, just for kicks. XD

Closer to 15. He's 12 at the very start of DB, and then spends a year or two having adventures. In fact, at least that, since the Dragon Balls are used at least twice: once during the Pilaf saga and once when King Piccolo comes back. DB covers a time period of at least two years, counting however many months there were in searching for the Dragon Balls and preparing for each of the tournaments.

One thing. During the canon events of Dragon Ball, Goku ascends to the look out at age...5-10 IIRC. He seems to be acting a lot more mature here.
