This is the one that started it all. The Soviet Union's first attempt at an air independent, high speed, long deployment, submarine attack platform with one mission: Catch and Kill NATO carrier fleets.

Looks like area under tower is designed to flood or at least be a lower pressure hull than others. First area to flood in case of problem and then get cut-off rest of boat.
Their safety reports were not the best and I believe they were very noisy when at sea
