Armament and Sensors:
The primary weapon system of the Type 45 destroyer is the Sea Viper (PAAMS) air defense system, centered around the Aster 15 and Aster 30 missiles capable of engaging aircraft and missile threats at ranges up to 120 kilometers. For close-in defense, it is equipped with a Phalanx CIWS, a 4.5-inch Mk 8 naval gun, and can also carry up to two Lynx Wildcat or Merlin helicopters for anti-submarine warfare and surveillance roles.

Aster 15 is being retired (likely they're being shot at Houthi missiles at the moment) as you say. From memory the Aster missiles have jets on them to enable them to actively manouver without the drag of using vanes - making them very manouverable. Asters are also active homing (they hae their own radar) so once the Sampson and sea viper system get the missile close to its target it can use it's own radar to home in on it - very hard to loose. I do think the T45s were a missed oppoutunity - they were essenitally just a modernised version of the T42s which were literally just ships with SAM systems, so they're just that - very advanced SAMs not much more. Not to mention tha having developed them they only built 6 of them (down from 12 hulls in the T42s). Similarly it seems ridiculous that such a large aircraft as an AW101 does not have a dipping sonar.

The mini guns were replaced with m2 50cal and it does have a torpedo decoy defense system . The harpoon are being replaced with nsm missiles.
