Istanbul (I-class) Frigate (4K update)
🕑 Added 2025-01-10 20:29:16 +0000 UTCThe I-class frigate, officially known as the Istanbul-class, is a modern multi-role frigate developed for the Turkish Navy under the MILGEM (National Ship) project. Designed primarily for anti-submarine warfare (ASW) and surface warfare (ASuW), the I-class also provides air defense capabilities and advanced command and control systems.
The lead ship, TCG Istanbul (F-515), serves as an advanced derivative of the Ada-class corvettes, featuring improved endurance, displacement, and combat systems. With a length of approximately 113 meters and a displacement of 3,000 tons, it is powered by a combined diesel and gas (CODAG) propulsion system, enabling a top speed of over 29 knots and an operational range of 5,700 nautical miles.
The I-class is armed with a 76mm OTO Melara Super Rapid Gun, anti-ship missiles (Atmaca), ESSM (Evolved Sea Sparrow Missile) for air defense, and torpedo launch systems for ASW. The frigate also carries advanced sensors, including a 3D radar and sonar systems, and features stealth characteristics to reduce its radar cross-section.
It is equipped with a flight deck and hangar to accommodate an S-70B Seahawk helicopter or similar unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The I-class represents Turkey’s growing naval capabilities and commitment to developing indigenous warship designs, tailored to meet its strategic needs in the Aegean, Mediterranean, and beyond.

How is a target capacity of one at a time on the AKR-D not a constraint, when the AN/SPG-62 can timeshare three targets when controlled by a SPY-1 or SPY-6? Does the AKR-D also timeshare off the main AESA system?
