The amazing thing about this movie is that it was made entirely in London about 15 mins from where I stay. Even the Vietnam and war scenes were all filmed in London at an old gas works. Kubrick flew in palm trees and everything.

It was sad what happened to Leonard at the end of basic training. This was a downside of the draft. In reality during the Vietnam War, in spite of the government's efforts to screen for psychiatric illness and mental/physical disability, a lot of ppl with mental issues were drafted which led to many atrocities..either they committed suicides or murdered innocents in cold blood because the war or harsh training worsened them mentally. Not everyone is cut out for the military, much less a war and Leonard was a perfect example. Leonard couldn't take it mentally and broke under pressure. That's why Joker told Cowboy that he was a "section 8". Having watched First Blood and now Full Metal Jacket, you could do a poll of other Vietnam War movies. They run the gamut of story and emotions. My favorites would be: Platoon (probably the winner) We Were Soldiers (my personal favorite) Good Morning Vietnam Born on the 4th of July Rescue Dawn Hamburger Hill The Deer Hunter I don't consider "Apocalypse Now" a Vietnam War movie, but more of an allegory of man's decline into madness and depravity using Vietnam as a backdrop (the movie is based on a book set in colonial Africa in the late 1800s), but it's still a freaking awesome movie.

and this was but a glimpse of what REALLY HAPPENED! i can't imagine... was sad overall.

Thank you for the thoughtful conversation after the movie. I think among a lot of Americans, the drill sergeant is thought of as mostly hilarious. I mean how can you come up with the stuff he says. The actor was a real life drill sergeant btw, who started acting after he tired from the military. But you know, watching the movie again, it's not really funny is it. The purpose of all this training is to turn young men into killing machines. It may in fact be necessary to fight in a war, but it's inhumane and we need more humanity.

Yes, you did react to a Stanley Kubrick movie before. It was "The Shining". As you said in your review, Kubrick does not necessarily make movies to entertain, but to make you think and feel. He is a master film-maker. You should see more of his movies. Another great anti-war movie from Kubrick is "Dr. Strangelove" (1964). It's more of a black comedy and satire on war and the military, but just as impactful as this one.

Yes very dark. I remember watching this and platoon as a kid. Both very good. Oliver Stone made platoon. The song Adagio for strings is used in platoon and its absolutely chilling. Good discussion at the end and the documentary that was mentioned sounded good too. War is hell. I like how Joker said, the duality of man and referenced Carl Jung. Nice reaction.

So happy you guys watched this. Platoon (1986) is an absolute must see to get a full understanding of the Vietnam war and how America in the end, lost its first major war.

Great reaction video! If you haven't seen it yet, I'd recommend "Platoon" (1986) as it's the quintessential movie about the Vietnam war.
