I might write a more detailed post at some point, and I haven't decided if I'm gonna make an announcement video or w/e until things are actually wrapped up, but: I did it, I told my boss I'm out, and while (for reasons that are ultimately beneficial to me) my last day won't be until the end of the month, the deed is effectively done.
I don't know that I definitely would have gone through with this without the huge outpouring of support from all of you. I like to think I would have, but I also don't like fooling myself, and in any case, I'm glad I didn't have to find out.
I will be honest: When this idea initially occurred to me, I said to several people "I think my audience is tapped out, and to get up to a comfortable monthly income I would need to push hard for new subscribers, and I'm worried I can't manage that." I really did not expect you to make this kind of statement; I did not think I was worth this kind of investment. So I wasn't completely certain that I was going to go through with it.
Well, after the first six hours of pledge upgrades I said to myself, "ah, I guess I don't have much choice now, do I?" I could maybe have let myself down by bailing on this, but not all of you. This is the good kind of "getting backed into a corner," to be clear - like an intervention that makes you clean up your life.
I have already had my first minor panic attack over "what if i run out of Content" and similar worries. More will come, I'm sure. Really, though, my list of practical concerns and doubts is short and largely specious. I think this will all work out Fine, and I'm looking forward to finding out what I'm going to do.

Totally. After reading that article I was like “ok, fair enough”. As long as Target (or whatever) is paying him, fine. Gotta love Pride Capitalism.

Yeah my understanding is that he enforces the copyright only so that the design doesn't get exploited. And per that article it sounds like I would have carte blanche anyway, I think I still count as a "smaller creator"! Thanks for looking that up, I'll see if I can find a good source for making stickers.

I had planned on selling those years ago - then I found out that the progress pride flag design is not public domain, so I need to get permission from the creator, and also what I really wanted to do is make real VHS sleeves and it turns out that is an unbelievable boondoggle, so I shelved it until i hopefully someday get in touch with someone who can help me figure out the logistics.

I was a bit saddened to hear you were losing your drive, but the time and mental energy being sucked out of you by a crappy job is now freed up for you to do what you really want to do. There is no possible way that you could run out of content. You have the amazing ability to find content in old technology and actually make it interesting. The reason this will work for you, and I hope it does, is that you're not just an old video technology hobbyist, but you have an infectious enthusiasm and an excellent teaching style. I subscribed and Patreonized immediately upon seeing the first video of yours that had been suggested by YouTube years ago.

You have absolutely got this, Gravis. You aren't the first YouTuber to walk this path, some carried on to unbridled success, others gave it a good go but ultimately decided that it wasn't quite enough. I know you're going to be the former, and the initial response from your audience should let you know that too! I'm really looking forward to seeing what you achieve when doing this full time, and I'm proud to be able to support you in this (admittedly very small) way. If you find yourself having negative feelings about any of it, I would just ask that you try to redirect them into one of your epic diatribes about the insanity of some tech decisions of the past, we can never have too many of those! I'm sure I speak for all of your patrons when I say Good Luck buddy, we are all here rooting hard for you!

Honestly, the amount you've raised the bar on your tech reviews has made me pretty much apathetic to any other creator. I don't wanna see anyone else review a quirky camera, a technology standard or pretty much any type of interesting tech other than you. Because with your content I feel like I get the whole picture and then some instead of the usual with creators opting out to just leave 80% of the question unswared so he can make a more "appealing" 15 min video. No need to say you got this or whatever, you always had it! Can't wait for what you have in store for us, especially when it's Video Toasting time!
