Video: Little Guys Season 2 Episode 1

After confirming that I was able to produce a quick video in the warehouse, I wanted to go back and see if I could make something a bit more involved, while still not getting too carried away. I think I succeeded.
A really interesting thing about the way this new space works is that it's really easy to shoot without a script (I just have a crib sheet) because when I inevitably lose track of what I have and haven't covered already, I can just go in the other room, rough cut the footage I already have. That tells me not just what I've said and what I haven't, but also how much runtime I've eaten up, so I can know mid-shoot whether I've chewed up a ton of unnecessary screen time meandering around on some subject that should really be abridged. I think the result is a lot better than the basement workbench vids were.

Where I saw the limits of this particular shoot were in the reliance on fuzzy digital zooms and going slightly off-mic when you turn to look at the monitor. Nothing that can't be helped with an additional small working surface, perhaps. Being able to see body language beyond just your hands already puts this miles ahead of the workbench-only videos, though there are certainly trade-offs. Maybe there's a hybrid scenario that brings together the best of both formats. Looking forward to seeing how you evolve it!

Oh, this isn't meant to be a permanent setup at all, I'm still in the process of figuring things out and finding furniture and whatnot, I just didn't want to wait until it was "perfect" to start making videos here

This new format for the “bench videos” is great. I think an additional side benefit of having you on camera + being in a similar space to the studio is that these feel more like they’re in the same “genre” as the big videos. As much as the bench stuff was enjoyable, they didn’t have the same vibe as the studio videos - these ones are feeling a lot more like “a CRD video”.

Is not being able to lean over your bench without ducking under a shelf annoying? I feel like you have enough space for a proper bench if you wanted one.

No prob, appreciate the feedback anyway! I know I gotta mix things up long term and not do everything in the same style, that's what was biting me in the ass to begin with, this is just the only angle I've figured out in the new space so far; I'll definitely adapt as needed.

For this one I agree. What you see is what you get. A full tear down wasn't needed. It was just a thought I had while watching, I hope it didn't come across as too negative or nitpicky. I think as an experimental video this was successful, and I look forward to seeing how you evolve the space. I like how having this new space has seemed to energize you, and I think that came across in this.

I felt like this one didn't benefit that much from being torn apart, so I figured I'd just do it here on the shelf and keep it off the cuff. In the future I'll figure out some kind of work surface.

I like this new location a lot. It works especially well for the intro and background/history discussion. However I do think that the Little Guys series in particular benefited from the close up desk view for tear downs and when using the machine. Maybe a camera mounted to the underside of the shelf above the machine could replicate that? I'm not 100% sure. Overall though I do really like that you've got a quick filming location, and I like that you can actually be in frame for Little Guys now. That's a huge improvement. You said yourself in the video that you're still figure out some things, so I wanted to try to give some feedback in case it helps.

I'm imagining a standard PCI breakout card/chassis, so you could connect standard PCI cards to this thing. Maybe drop a voodoo in it?

Honestly, you tell me! Like, I had a good time shooting this video, I didn't really feel too constrained, but I also picked a machine that fit my current limitations. The question is, does it feel awkward to you? Does it feel like I'm trying to work in a space that isn't appropriate, or does it feel good?

I think the PICMG group just sits around all day writing up new "standards". They say they're "nonprofit" but $750 for specs and $2250 for membership? Yeesh. That being said, I love my PICMG v1.0 shoeboxes since they have both PCI and ISA slots. In one with a v1.0 backplane, I have a 486 SBC and a Gravis PNP card just for running classic demos and games. And in another with a v1.3 backplane I have an i7 SBC for testing more modern stuff... so versatile!

So excited to jump into this one! The powerline phones video really demonstrated the potential of the warehouse for filming. Are you managing ok with having less surface space and a less aerial angle?
