HAHAHAHA LOVE IT!

Fun fact: the schedule Sokka pulled out was their actual production schedule for the third season.

One of the reason the Painted Lady never showed up to help was because the water was polluted. Until it became unpolluted, by the villagers helping themselves, she could reappear and thank Katara for helping them.

River

direct action

I suppose. To me, it just seems too easy to just make everything into a potshot at the US. I mean, everyone does that, everyone is aware of how fucked this country is right now, and I suppose I just had a bit of a knee jerk reaction when this show which I actually see as prime escapism from it all is compared to the politics I so despise now.

Fun Fact: In the previous episode “The Headband” Aang convinces Sokka to let him stay in school by telling him they’re learning about a secret river. Sokka proceeds to say “I am a fan of secret rivers”.....fast forward to this episode and they have the map of the river that leads straight to the fire lord. I like how it was such a small line, but was a big detail on how they are able to navigate their way to the fire lords palace.

We're just localizing it I guess. The China/NK/Japan angle is so obvious I guess we didn't feel the need to address it a ton. Plus these are American storytellers and we were VERY cognizant of the Bush Era when this was originally aired and we're shooting this in 2020/2021. Merica is fucked up right now and on our mind and we were just feeling our feelings.

I'm not at all sure why you think industrial pollution and poverty are clearly china inspired, or most of the show in general, which I'd say is more pan-asian influenced, if anything. The martial arts draws heavily from Korea as well, and a lot of the terminology/elemental lore has Indian roots. A lot of the show draws from Buddhism, which is a major religion and philosophy throughout Asia, not simply China. Anyway you can draw parallels however you wish, but I think drawing comparisons to the US is perfectly valid and a lot more interesting and valuable than a standard "it's all China" blanket reading.

How are they NOT seeing that the parallels are more about China and to a lesser extent Japan than the US? I mean yeah, i’m sure that’s in there too, but the industrial pollution and poverty was clearly China inspired, as was 90% of the show in general.

Gotta love a kid show that teaches kids to commit eco-terrorism. ;)

Something I always found a be a bit of a neat parallel in this episode was Katara here and Zuko in Zuko Alone helping the village out, after lying about their identity. But while Zuko was on his own and got kicked out, when the reaction to Katara got similar, she had her brother and the rest of them to stand up for her.

I would argue the Cabbage Merchant makes an appearance in Ember Island Players That should count!!!!!!!!!!!!!

include the !

nicktelecast .

Hey for some reason the password isn't working on the vimeo video. Can anyone help?

Aang (Pipinpadaloxicopolis III), Sokka (Wang Fire)

I know people said it already, but yeah. The writers confirmed that the Painted lady's power was connected to the river and the the pollution was essentially preventing her from being able to manifest. So she was basically trapped in the Spirit World.

AND animated shows at that too. i cant wait to see what they come up with over at avatar studios. its gonna be great.

Mark

What a time to get into Avatar just as ViacomCBS makes a new studio with the original creators to make more stuff in the Avatar universe 🙌

Adam Vialpando

Sokka is a back bender actually. 😎

Adam Vialpando

He always seems to show up just when new viewers stop trying to look for him.

Enigma Rising

And the winter solstice is when the worlds are able to blend more so Hei bai was able to be more active in his attack.

3rd Eye Phreak

There have been 4 appearances of cabbage man so far. B1 chapters 5 and 9, B2 chapters 12 and 15.

Fun fact: Sokka's schedule was a real point of reference for the animators making the show to stay on track

Rodrigo Borges

You guys were right in your assumptions about the river's condition not letting the painted lady help. Spirits in the avatar world are very connected to nature in different ways, that's why hei bai went feral when his forest got burned

Joseph Rapp

just to help you not have to go back and check much, there were 2 cabbage watch events in book 2. "The Serpents Pass" had the cabbages destroyed when he wanted to get on a ferry. "Tales of Ba Sing Se" we saw his cabbages being eaten by the animals that Aang released when relocating the zoo. EDIT: i forget yall filmed this MONTHS ago so yeah carry on

Avi Chetri

If Captain Planet is canon, I nominate Aang as a Heart-bender, or Sokka (with his devilish good looks).

Avi Chetri

Katara has a superhero alias (The Painted Lady), Zuko has one (Blue Spirit), Toph (The Blind Bandit).

The second season took so long to come out, I lost interest. Is it good?

Hate to be THAT person that recommends anime especially off topic/ if you guys aren't taking requests right now, sorry! ... but obligatory Attack on titan rec lol. If you guys love the lore and story telling/pacing of ATLA and love the similar themes and settings of Game of Thrones I think y'all would love that show! I think you guys would really appreciate the cinematography and visuals because you guys live for that shit and the writer created the series with an ending in mind :D its a more mature show than Atla and LOK if you guys want something that just takes it up a few 1,000 notches and the subbed version really hits a certain way its a great show to rewatch without getting old too ;)
