So I think, on the "Aang never suffered an embarrassing public defeat" thing... There was only one situation that the public actually knows he failed in, but it was really bad: When he ran away and the air nation fell. He was "lucky" enough to outlive everyone who'd have a problem with him doing that, except for that old man in The Storm.

Another thing to consider about ATLA vs LOK when it comes to growth and development is the target audience. ATLA was for a younger audience while LOK was more geared towards older teens. Aang was 12, Korra is 17 and pretty much considered a young adult. I always imagine the tone of LOK is closer to if ATLA was from Zuko's perspective as a 16 year old almost-man.

I know you guys just want to see our girl Korra master air bending. But keep in mind that her personality is very hard headed like you said just like Earth bending so learning the opposite element of that isn't going to be easy for her at all besides she is 17. And I'm pretty sure in this episode she said she had memorized nearly all the practice forms. If so, she is studying and learning it's just that the doing is what's not happening. And Korra has had to deal with things that aang never had. All these politics and reporters and keeping her reputation up is really fucking hard for a teenager to have to deal with. Hell I'm 20 and I can't even fucking imagine how to manage something like that😅
