natto is just once of those classic "gross foods" unlikely to be enjoyed by anyone who didnt grow up eating it. like jellied eel, casu marzu, surstromming. its one of the foods featured in the "disgusting food museum" in Malmo. thats why they find it funny he wants to try it and he compares it to rotten cheese.

There are only two catholic regents on the council and the council is only a year old, so Mariko's dad could not have been on it. The council is not something permanent, only until the heir is sixteen years old, it is a council of regents after all.
