Some commentary on the beginning discussion. An absurd proportion of the native population died upon European contact, the remainder often using the settlers against their enemies for short term political gain - like what happened with Cortes. Ultimately, the reason why America was colonized so thoroughly was because of how destructive European disease was to the native populations, I've heard somewhere between 90% and 99% of the population. This destruction of the local population is part of why the slave trade took root in America - they needed cheap labor that could survive disease. Now, compare this to the Japanese who, through contact with China and other countries, have access to a lot of the same disease pool as Europe. Hell, one of the regents has leprosy. Can't exactly run roughshod over a population that hasn't been recently ravaged by disease you introduced.

Not a scholar of Japanese history and culture but if I remember correctly from some old hyper fixation; women from samurai families were also considered "Samurai" and were expected to have weapons training on top of everything else. There are accounts of women as leaders and fighters in combat as well. Basically Mariko's husband didn't "let" her do anything she a boss all on her own. Probably why he such mealy mouf lil bitch. He went out like a champ though, a real Samurai's death; in combat serving his lord. Also, Hatamoto is as much a role or responsibility as it is a title. I also think Toranaga gave Blackthorn that title to make it clear to his own people that the Anjin was important and if you mess with him you mess with me.
