I used a linear supply like this as a BFO supply (transistorized) in my tube radio to get a clean 5V supply. Now I hear the bridge rectifier diodes switching on shortwave. Sigh. I didn't put little capacitors across these diodes yet. Next time I open that radio I will add them.

James , I had a meanwell type smps and had the same noise issue ... I got rid of it and got a Dell server smps 12.9 volts and 75 amps ..... Just as clean as a whistle , no noise .... I do know 15 volts makes for a hotter radio , but I don't need a couple extra watts from my radio.... HP server supply's are also quiet ....

You would probably have to shift the switching frequency, or outboard RF chokes from the supply in a shielded can, (wires from the supply would need shielding as well.) Linear supplies are the only way to go when space is not a concern.

i have meanwell 15v 66 amp i'm running my ham radio off of . i'm getting noise in the radio . i put Type 43 Ferrite on hot an ground wires and 103 caps to help but it's still noise .. any help ?

Thats getting pretty big already, 6V AC, 60Hz transformer, (big core) a bridge rectifier, and a say... a 2200uF cap.

Biggest problem with PC playback is you can't stretch the window. I've been using Picture-in-Picture mode to get it the size I want. I miss Youtube :(

Hi! Thanks for good video. To me this video serves as a reminder how involved the process of choosing a component for a design is. Those PSU's, I've never found one that I'm happy with for permanent solution and typically end up rolling my own. Either they are too inefficient, too bulky, too noisy, too unstable or the noise is in the wrong band, or whatever else. These days we have an excellent choice of smps regulator chips that really simplify the design and allow building PSU's to our own specs. I always thought that it's because I have too many constraints, but no. This Christmas I wanted to run tree-lights at 3mA@26V from a boat battery for 2 months. I thoght that finally, a good usecase for those blocks. I bought 5 different adjustable blocks only to find that the best efficiency was a meagre 20%. That's not really a complicated set of req's...

Would love to see an AM modulator the size of one of those power supplies that would modulate the AF output of the blue tooth device at the IF frequency with a simple gimmick coupled into the IF chain.

Nice video. Really interesting to see how you can make these power suppplies silent for radio operation. Appreciated the ยซliveยป feel to the video with power outages. What about a linear power supply? Transformer being too bulky?

My first thought was that switchers and AM radios could never get along together. But that prejudice is being tested by you, which makes for a very interesting vid. Thank you! You did not mention ferrite noise suppressors on line input and supply output, but you did put the whole switcher into a repurposed dud capacitor to limit EM noise from the pulse transformer. You are also disabling the radio IF when using a BT receiver, and you showed that a BT receiver is not bothered by switcher noise.. A fun investigation indeed !
