Hi! Humboldt county local here to answer CMRN’s question about the Humboldt flu. Unfortunately, it’s not a euphemism, it’s very real (more well known today as the Humboldt crud or the Humboldt hack), characterized as a very wet and phlegmy cough. Since the fog, which is very prevalent up here contains water, the crew was inhaling fluid into their lungs and that’s why they were sick. Everyone catches the crud up here, it’s real nasty.
