I only recall trying one claw machine in my childhood (early 90s) which I think was before the bias system due to its crude two button operation - Back arrow and Right arrow. I distinctly remember the back arrow button lit after inserting a 50p (old Irish) coin. Pushing it would rapidly move the claw towards the back. The back arrow button deactivated when released and the right arrow would light. Pushing this again would move the claw rapidly towards the right. As soon as this button was released, the claw would drop and end up grabbing a toy arm or ear that would slip off. I stopped after 2 attempts and watched others get caught out with their first coin where they tried moving the claw in steps not realising that the button deactivates after a single press and of course the claw dropping down near its starting position with nothing to grab! I never tried a claw machine since then.

It's possible she was counting the plays between wins, and how many others had played so far, so she could step in and get the prize for a few credits. I'd expect the machines to dither the payout grab so it wasn't suspicious.

I believe it can be set by the operator to payout at a certain %age. In the UK there are strict laws on percentage payouts that have to be maintained- and displayed on each machine.

But... is it triggered every 10th time? Or just 10% of the time?

On a visit to the Rhyl air show, a few years ago, we let my then young son have a go on one of these, and I noticed a woman had a clicker counter and was counting the goes people had, so presumably she was waiting to pounce at the right time.
