🕑 Added 2024-12-27 07:13:15 +0000 UTCTesting a mystery solder from AliExpress. They don't even tell you the alloy, so it's very hit and miss what this could be used for. It does have a fairly aggressive flux core. And to be fair, it kinda works on random materials.

Definitely stock up while it's available. The price of solder in the UK skyrocketed after the legislation.

You should put that board you soldered in a plastic bag and pin it up where you could keep a eye on to see what the flux does to the copper.We here across the pond can still get 60/40 from Mouser , DigiKey at least for now. Yes i have stocked up.

Have you tried to solder the stainless steel with your preferred brand on top of the Chinesium alloy to see if it takes?

Really odd solder. Have you seen the second picture in the listing with the cigarette lighter? I have come across similar listings where they show two twisted stranded copper wires with solder wrapped around and a lighter underneath. Some listings even show the awful results of "soldering" wires together with this technique. I think it is intended for use with an open flame, more like bazing, not sure. Thank you for testing it.

That's quite an odd mix. Good for comparing the characteristics of solder alloys. Another thing I've come across is 60/40 tin/lead solder with an intermittent flux core, or none at all. It makes for a rather disappointing soldering experience.

Our local hackerspace has a reel of 40/60 solder. Yes, I'm correct: the damn thing contains 40% tin and 60% lead! Absolutely awful to solder with - and I guess this is what they use on super cheap electronics in toys etc. None of those joints is nice and shiny, all need rework.
