Handy USB remote switch with secret modes
🕑 Added 2025-02-01 06:57:16 +0000 UTCA look at a very simple inline remote control switch for controlling USB-A type lights and other things. It turns out that there are undocumented modes, and you can pair several remotes to it. But the software isn't as versatile as the little 12V cube versions.

The little device draws 6 mA at standby. Mij powerbank doesn't like that. But it is usefull. Unit+click button was €5,75. Thanks for the hidden options!

I think I have one of those keyfob types somewhere. But it was easier to order some more than find it :)

Yeah, you have to check the options when buying. It's easy to add just one part. However, it is compatible with most 433MHz buttons, so you do have many options.

I bought a couple which just arrived. But only the USB part, not the button. Be careful to select the right choice on aliexpress to get both parts!

I am now considering how generally at least once a fortnight I have to get behind the TV to power cycle the Chromecast, which takes power from USB. This could make that a lot less problematic.

You could, but the existing MOSFET is probably capable of decent current.

So if you took the USB cables off and just used fly leads, could you run a 5V relay to control larger loads? (With a protection diode across the coil)
