How a stun gun creates high voltage from 9V
🕑 Added 2025-06-07 00:27:06 +0000 UTCA look at the circuitry used in stun guns. This is quite an old one, so I'd guess that the circuitry might have been refined a bit since for easier manufacturing.
I can testify that these things are very painful.

I just ordered a 3500pF 500KV capacitor for $60USD. I wonder if it would work better than the on in this circuit :)

I doubt "they" will let you make this video public, Clive. But thanks for the teardown. A nice simple device. I'd love to know the inception voltage of the spark gap; guessing 1-2kV. Take your point about that 1/4W part. A Vishay VR25 would do the job and there are PRC / CN copies of that technology available. That output transformer looks quite well made. As if they've vacuumed it after potting.
