I haven't a clue how old this thing is. I've had it for a very long time, and ironically I brought it over for a video when it alerted me to its presence by waving.

It might have a braking effect on the passing magnet. I'm not sure.

Too cool. Thanks Big Clive. I wonder about the engineer tasked with designing this. Maybe it was a toy for his kid that found other uses or?

Would a diode work just as well as the snubber network? I assume in this application they'd choose the snubber just because it's slightly cheaper.
