Interesting test probe for oscillating inductors
🕑 Added 2025-10-06 08:40:35 +0000 UTCSuch a cheap and simple device, but a very easy way to test if an inductor in a voltage regulator or power supply is "running". The unit detects the magnetic field using a tiny surface mount inductor at the end of the probe and lights an LED to show that there is a high frequency magnetic field present.
If you don't anticipate using one much then the lithium cell powered version will be much more practical. You could even heatshrink it with the cell in its holder, as it should last years, even with regular use.

That is interesting. Thanks Big Clive. I wouldn't have thought such a device existed really. Probing inductors for failure. I was wondering about the symbols like anti-static, anti-bin it and the other one. Simple enough but effective.

Handy little device. Might be useful to check if the local oscillator is running in AM radios.
