A few years ago i was talking to my bestfriend about just this. He was being a bit anxsty, wondering why people in his home town seemed to take him seriously and listen to his advice when, to his mind, he was a guy in his early 30s, without a college degree, who worked in a warehouse. I asked him if he remembered those adults, when we were kids, who seemed to have it all put together, who you could go to for advice, or lean on in times of trouble. He said, "of course!" "Yeah," I said, "I think that's us now." "But" he said "We don't have it together AT ALL!" "Nope." I agreed, "But thsts a secret. I don't think they did either. At all. It's just they faked it better than others. And they cared about people and were willing to play that role for us, because it was important." There was dead silence on the phone for a few seconds before said bestfriend tapped into his inner Luke Skywalker and moaned "Nooooooo!!!! That's IMPOSSIBLE!!!!" But it's why I've learned not to compare myself with others (too much). Yeah, I wish I was married with kids right now (badly!!!!!!). But none of us REALLY have it put together. We're all just doing the best we can and flailing around much of the time. And thsts scary. But also kinda heartwarming too.

It's easier said than done I know, I made this partially for me too as it feels impossible some days to accept myself as is. Our culture does not want us to be happy with ourselves because it's not profitable or easy to manipulate. Maybe if we weren't constantly bombarded with fake images of what we "should" be like than we'd feel more at peace

Been at it 45 years and am still working on it. That is ok, life is fluid and having it all figured out would be boring. Set reachable goals, don't worry about the neighbors, just enjoy the ride with family (blood or found, doesn't matter) taking pleasure in the little things.

I agree, I mean, I've been working a lot lately to get some things for myself, but it's not the things themselves that made me happy, it's the fact that, ever since I was a kid, I wanted to be able to have things I wanted from working hard, growing up poor washing exactly the best, but now I have the newest consoles and everything, it's not the things themselves that make me happy, but knowing that hey, I did something I wanted as a kid, that makes me proud of myself. Sometimes, ya gotta go back and give your inner child something they'd be proud of, ya know?
