When she can't trust him, she makes sure he can't act against her, and unfortunately for Bastion she has very inconvenient control of his body via her blasted torc. Great for teleporting, not so great for staying conscious when she'd rather he not be.And now, the khert. It's still nighttime so Duane should be kicking around here somewhere~

A nest in the unborn baby forest... What advantages/memories do the unborn manifest in the Khert? Camo? Potential for new life? Mysteries...
It's really part of the development of great story telling. You put in all these mysteries and let them cook for a while in the subconscious. Then when major plot points are revealed all of the motivations of the characters are rich and fully fleshed out.

You're not dumb at all, the baby forest is a mystery in progress :) It won't be solved for a while but it's something Lady Ilganyag spends a lot of time tending to, so I gotta show her doing it from time to time! No need to worry about it yet though.
Great exposition that you alluded to a few pages back. It establishes what Bastion knew and when he knew it. However I just don't get the baby forest at all (because I am dumb). Is the baby forest assembled by Lady I? Is it already in existence and she prunes/tends to it? Is it babies that could be born but haven't been/have died along with their mothers? Why does she have the babies in her mouth if she is not making her own forest? When Sette cut them loose before the babies had thanked her. Again, I am dumb. Sincerely, The dumb guy.
