I reeeeally enjoyed this small scene of them as kids. Papa Adelier was a very hard worker and Duane had to hustle to keep up with him. On nights like this though when dad would pass out against the stacks he tried to finish his own chores as quietly as he could to let him snooze.
Mama Adelier died from complications giving birth to Lemuel. Dad never for a moment made Lemuel feel guilty about this, but his wife's death fundamentally changed him, and he was distant and unhappy from that moment on until the day he finally died. Lemuel developed some demons pretty early on in regards to this.
The idea that he was sent away for killing his mother is pure delusion though.

Francine: I was going to ask if you did. From what my friends tell me that is a fairly typical brother thing. The other is pinning a smaller sib down and dangling spit/phlem millimeters from their mouths. I think they make up for it all when they mature a bit, but I could be wrong. 😋

Aww, that first page is sweet. OK, it balances out the "fart in the mouth" thing, which really shocked me. I have no brothers.
