Years and years and years ago I used to RP video game nonsense with friends over AIM. Duane got his start in these chat RPs when a friend of mine needed someone to play the bit character brother of her character Grissom, from a game we adored called Vagrant Story. This bit character who was known in the game only as "Commander Duane" has only half a dozen lines but in one of his two scenes he backhands a soldier just like Claggart is doing here to our Duane.
It took almost twenty years but finally sweet justice.

*smooch* I've always understood it simply to mean striking someone with the back of your open hand, instead of the palm or a fist. That's all :)

That's still not a backhand swing, it's a forehand swing with reorienting your hand with the dorsal side (for some reason. Why wouldn't you slap with the palmar side? I think I remember from somewhere that the dorsal side kind of slap hurts the victim less? Not sure). With the backhand swing you start with the hand across your torso and bring the hand away from yourself

He hit him so hard, it rebounded back? The weird khert lights are flickering, making fast movement look backwards? The camera wasn't sync'd to the lights? I dunno. Anyway, I agree. I'd call it a bitchslap myself. (Historical usage, the term shouldn't exist but since it does...)

I don't understand the usage of the word backhand, the stroke in the comic is going in the opposite direction.
