I had two versions of the second page - one with dialogue and one without. In the end I went with the one without, but there is a version where I had Duane explain that the newly blinded Shaensigin is afraid that the drum is the heart beating again, and she's backing away from it. I hated it though, I'm hoping it's clear enough without that explanation D:

I forgot to mention this earlier when I was still reading through it--I like that Duane's anatomy research last night actually did help him save the day, but not in the way he expected! And Lem making full use of that drum. The Chekhov's gun game in this chapter is strong.
I understood what was going on perfectly without any dialogue. I think it would have distracted. You could see that salt lizard's was blind and panicking at the noise which accompanied pain last time she heard it. This is actually pretty tragic for all involved. All any of these creatures (lizards, gods, and spiderpaws) want to do is survive and protect their own. They are centuries past talking it out though.
