Amen. Ashley is high on the guest list of "The Party," a running piece of family folklore in which my daughters and I imagine throwing the bash of bashes, attended by all the artists and inspiring people we admire.

Isn't the poor chomped Ald the wright the Captain referred to as useless without pymary, when he's surprised and pleased Duane has the skill to defend him from excessive varpies? Mister "I'm Specialized"?

Shaensigin chomped one of the Alds. He's had some lines but was mostly an unnamed red shirt. Very few people know exactly what the Etalarche curse does. Duane stated earlier in the chapter that his professors at school refused to talk about it. None of the dialog leading up to this has plainly stated what it does. Duane will eventually put two and two together, but this is quite a bizarre and startling development from his perspective :)

Who was that guy Shaensigen chomped? Just a random redshirt? Ald or Crescian? How do Duane & Lem not understand what's going on? Have they not heard all this talk of the Etalarche curse for the past 30 minutes or so? How the hell will Roger F-H escape this to go hang out with Queen Sonorie? Is not "pissing goatsnakes" the best cuss ever?

The curse travels to the cursed first. It needs to find and connect with Roger. After that, it bounces off him and echoes across the whole country. This way, those in proximity to him (who would have the greatest opportunity to hurt him) are struck first and struck with the most strength. But it's fast. The opportunity to escape it is over at this point.

How do the effects of the curse travel? Is there a method to who was affected first (proximity, caste, individual levels of immunity like with a virus), or is it more or less random?
