What Harmless said. This family was able to keep a lot of its "cultural" artefacts, like these few pieces of armour, because humans find it ridiculous and no kind of threat. But keeping their weapons was a bridge too far. With that said, he probably could have stolen a knife from upstairs, but instead really seemed to have his heart set on repurposing this rad spoon. He's only a teenager. He's kind of silly.

Armor isn't just for battles. Can keep regular beasty bites from getting through. Can be a cultural thing, and also what's perceived as a minor concession. The pieces they're wearing wouldn't stop a blade or an axe wielded by a full grown well trained soldier.
