Duane's memories of Mikaila are never bloody and cruel like this. She's always the perfect and whole little girl he remembers from his final days. The fact she's showing up like this now is a sign all is not well in-between her father's green ears. And I think it's fairly clear what his imagination is trying to get him to acknowledge.

Oh, now I have the page that I vaguely remembered: http://www.casualvillain.com/Unsounded/comic/ch08/ch08_40.html "Lemuel found my eyes... tended me... I recall little until... I began to crave my teeth in his stomach. [...]" My memory made "I began to sink my teeth in his stomach" from this.

Unreliable narrator, for sure.

Oh yeah of course :) nice Uncle Lemuel! And the thing with setting people on fire, it's just how Ssaelit live, it's part of their culture. Slight confusion sometimes whether you have to start the fire while they still live or when they've died, though.

Pretty much :) But also a Nice Guy!

Oh right, granny Two-Toes explained how these memories are untainted now due to lack of a censoring brain. So Lem is in fact a dick-deep-in-entrails short-tempered slightly-religiously-fanatic hobby arsonist..?

Duane punched him out and broke his nose, but that wasn't likely to have killed him. The comic hasn't said for certain one way or the other, but there's a high likelihood that Lemuel is alive.

We saw him pretty clearly last chapter. That's why Duane's so upset. Suddenly he was looking back and seeing reality, and not his varnished personal version of it. We'll see a bit more of it on the next two pages.

One thing I don't get (maybe I need to reread another time): Is Lemuel alive right now? My vague memory is that Duane attacked him in his first days as a Galit, but I don't know how that went.

It struck me one day that nearly everything we know about the Adelier family is through Duane's memory, and so it is stained in the colour of his particular viewpoint. So we as readers are prone to imagine Lem as a nice guy, but we've never actually seen the real Lemuel yet.
