He really did put his own discomfort with his marriage ahead of his responsibility to be there for his daughter. Does he deserve to be kept away from her afterwards? Absolutely not, but he'd accepted the consequence as inevitable, and it sapped the life right out of him the moment that letter came.
If he can turn this around though... if he can be the hero Elka thinks he can be...

I've known this gal since we were 14 (im 50, and moved every 2-3 years, so maintaining childhood friendships wasn't easy). She's one of the smartest, funniest, most literate and educated people I knowm. If I can just get her STARTED, I'm confident this will be right up her alley. Your range, and the utterly skillful handling of shifts in time are part of what makes Unsounde d brilliant and believable. I don't think it will ever be for the masses, but it could easily increase it's readership tenfold if someone somehow got the word out. I firmly believe this.

Do you think that very "range" could be a big deal-breaker for a lot of people? If you want these sweet moments, you have to put up with a lot of violence, politics, even occasional absurd kid silliness. It really bounces all over the place :)
