An effort they are more than willing to undertake. I tend to find it endearing (depending always on context). And it IS correct, if you take their accepted pronunciation of "pasta" into account.

Ahahaha, yes, I have noticed this too. Brits flatly reject correct pronunciation of foreign words and names. Did it ever drive you nuts how many of them mispronounced Obama? I mean, with the deluge of American media that makes it over there, that takes effort.
(One thing I learned during my seven years in the UK, is that if a word smells even vaguely French, all pains will be taken to reject the correct pronunciation. Belvoir Castle, in our neighborhood, was Beaver Castle.)
