Decades ago I went with a friend to retrieve some things (including a kitten who would become my dearest companion through 19 years, six state-to-state moves, and one bad marriage) from her former apartment. It was a Tucson summer: 107 degrees. The power was off and someone had left raw meat in the fridge (or the dustbin). It was a thick, almost sweet smell that seemed to coat your tongue when you breathed in. My eyes were watering, and I kept having to run outside to avoid being sick. It's the worst thing I've ever smelled. I imagine this is similar, but with hot metal garbage skip notes.
