Shock of all shock most of her kids run away soon after meeting her if this is how she views them. They're designed to have lives of betrayal and pain, “Pain was very important to him” after all. She rings of parents who view their children's admiration as being owed, or of an adoptive parent who views the arrangement as a purchase. (Honestly, she always struck me as similar to the Other Mother from Coraline in that she does love her children, but “It's the love of something owned”. (Similar to Nary in some respects, only with different applications.)

Ah, I did figure that was why the firstborn finally agreed to come slinking home! Sette #1 has been pretty upfront about expecting to get another turn on the soul, mom. Meanwhile our Sette's learning to turn those claws out on purpose... yay :'(
