Lu described it well, but yes, there is a sense that senet beasts are stuck in the configuration they were made - not only physically, but in terms of their personality. Ruck will always be a selfish predator, Lady Ilganyag will always be a controlling manipulator, Minnow will always be feckless and flighty. These aren't necessarily bad things and you can argue that adult humans are kind of the same. We tend to reach a point in intellectual and emotional development and then camp there until we die. When the idea is applied to senets though, it's talking more about them at large. Humanity can change, and has changed dramatically. Senets as a whole cannot. They remain as they were originally conceived, and they will never evolve. Humans will.

Yep. If you go waaay back to the very start of this chapter, you can get an even better shot of him tucking that knife in there. It's very convenient!

I guess it depends on how you define "change." They can acquire new information but could Ruck ever unlearn his predator nature? Could Minnow stop being so physically affectionate? Probably no, imo. I think Duane has changed his core "self" more over the course of the comic than any Senet we've seen has changed in the last several hundred years.

Are senet beasts really unable to change? It seems odd, even if you have an internal khert that shouldn't really prevent your mind from learning and growing.

Today he's seen the Etalarche curse and the black tongues' plan for the dammakhert. The only thing humans won't outgrow is the khert. If he cuts the capacity for growth out of someone with the knife, could a Crescian dammakhert broadcast that to everyone? Or maybe he does just want to go to Alderode, land of the dammakhert
