That's such a funny passage, at the end of chapter 11. If Murkoph is the Ssaelit spellslicer it's been hard to square with these other activities. I used to think he was just making stuff up, but maybe he had a period after getting Confounded where he went on a rampage

He's here in the flesh right now though, so clearly something went wrong. He mentioned confoundments, and they are also mentioned as an obstacle in the Ssaelit book. So, presumably, he failed at his mission. Perhaps because Duane is but a ghost he can pass to where Murk couldn't, despite Murk looking like a mode advanced galit physically. That barrier also what's drew him insane I guess.

How interesting too that he coaxed Duane with the same idea as Lady I- sounding the great Unsounded and bringing the answer back to his people… damn… Will he do it someday? Haha! I figured the eyes came from Bastion not Argenti. I think Murkoph knows this stuff because he used to be the spellslicer. Looks like Duane's not getting hauled around by his yesterdays like a wanker anymore
