'The cruelty was important to him' gives me extra goosepumps here. Like he didn't just design her and Jac's bodies but the whole rituals of how they're raised and treated, and this would be a Big and Significant Event of Significance.

I would say Duane benefits from -accepting- his past, and all that he's been through. If he forgot it though, the way our pointy girls are so keen to, I think he'd suffer for it the same way they potentially have. It's often said that acceptance beats avoidance. First Sette has spent a thousand years not accepting what her family did to her, with it eating her up inside. First chance she got, she dumped all knowledge of it. Doesn't seem to have left her in a much better state of mind.
