Regina. Argenti Sr. is cruel and demanding, but probably in an "ordinary" way. Nary is a manipulative, charismatic bastard. Sette's loyalty to him is not caused by simple lack of certain memories. The singing letter that she discovered shows this—he knows how to be a "supportive Da'" on ocasion , to keep Sette loyal, and he did keep her around for years, after all. Regina, from what little we know of her, is a mad killer. And it was mentioned in the blog that Jivi ran away because he feared she'd kill him.

Or my mom's old classic: "Hell is Children."
Rifter
There's an old classic of Pat Benatar's that comes to mind. Hell is for Children.
Ashley
Yeah, First Sette got her with the spear. Ghosts don't feel pain, so an injury would register as a memory of pain. This'll read better when the next page gives it context.

F Sette (for first) and Sette F (for Frummagem) I've seen work well as descriptors
Luuuuuuu
...that's uncomfortably astute, and true.
Dr. Badvibes
as it stands right now: seems fitting how khette goes through all this while lady i just gets blown up in a split second. the children always suffer more.
Dr. Badvibes
i wonder who will end up looking the worse parent: nary, regina or will argenti sr.
Mal
She didn't end up in a freak circus, or somewhere even worse, so that's something. Could she survive without having a Frummagem family name attached to her? Possibly, but I wouldn't bet on those odds, at least not until she had grown as much as she was allowed to.
Duke BG
Well. I guess we saw it because First hit our Sette with the spear-or-what-is-it. Just a timing.
Duke BG
I thought so too. It's just that we saw Frumagem flashback on the "impact"
CD
Shoved back one of First Sette's own freshly made eels, still lurking about all clawed up! So presumably a chunk of shed memory from First herself.
Duke BG
Did Sette (Frum) shove her own memories into Sette (First)? Or is it just a revibration of a bad day that is still in her own memory and we don't know exactly what Sette (First) just remembered? p.s. I shall not adopt the "Khette" monicker.
Ashley
I think Duane sees her that way. It was important he got to meet her younger self earlier in the chapter, so he's not super confused here :)

There is some symbolism at play with Sette Frummagem's colouration. I don't want to spell it out too much, that's lame, but to see both sides of her split self in balance, is suggesting she's finally reached a state of balance, or is at least on her way. She's also looking at who she really is, what she can really do, where she came from, where she's going. It's finally reflected in her appearance because it's finally present in her thoughts. I didn't feel it would be there in that flash of her beaten, younger self. Didn't feel like it belonged.

I see the first soul is… curiously positioned. Detached? Injured? Screeching its head off? Who knows! Edit: I was looking at the wrong thingie, the birb is still there.
Alight
Thankfully Duane's there to pull her out.
CD
Cripes. I wasn't expecting First's nerfing to bite her so quickly but that's what you get! The mind learns to tolerate its traumas but she ripped all those defenses out too. Argh.
CD
The way ghost-visages change with the mental states of their minds, I'm guessing Sette just got knocked back to feeling like a freshly whupped kid and lost some of her raw ghost colouration in the process? Even if she's not showing as clean a visage as Khette yet. And yeah - black eye and blood from memory and spear both.
Luuuuuuu
And getting caught in your own crossfire.
JarJar
Definitely Sette. As far as we know Khette doesn't wear clothes at all. Also this outfit matches with Sette's flashback look (when her teeth fell out)
Mister Scarecrow
God Nary is a cruel bastard to throw that at a child like it's the child's fault. But man if that feeling of loss doesn't come through and have me hurt for him all the same. We see that some with Mathis too. The loss of your other half and the grief and desire for self-annihilation thwarted, through no fault of their own, by a child you simultaneously cannot stand to be near because of their connection to that grief but also being the only thing of that person you have left and your responsibilities to both that lost person's memory and your child.
Acob Acob
If it's Sette, why did she lose the Tirna colour split? Why does it look like she lost her eye? Or is that "just" (ugh...) blood from being punched by Nary? Or if it's Khette (less likely, because here lost eye would have to switch sides), did she get to feel one of Sette's memories? In any case, we've switched from blue eyes (both Sette and Khette on this page before the flashbacks) to green.
Gally
Sette! Khette aint have that eye.
Luuuuuuu
Despite my struggles to hope he's not as bad as he so obviously is - I really want to... think he's better than... as awful as he must be - this is sorely testing that. ...this can't be easy for Sette F either.
Acob Acob
Confused about the last panel. Are we seeing Sette or Khette here?
Luuuuuuu
Given that right now she's a ghost and those can look like however they want, I think it's safe to say that's how she actually looks right now.
Inwoods
We're getting child sette in the last panel, is that how Duane is seeing her? Or in the flashback, how she's seeing herself?
Ashley
I think you're right.
JarJar
Ah noo. Don't make me feel bad for the bad guy! That shouldn't be allowed!! (it's ok, I don't mind)
Spider
Trauma dumping your enemies to defeat
Michael Stakely
I feel like Sette is better positioned to win a trauma arms race since she still retained some of those memories; she selectively edited them to give herself a better life. Khette just ripped hers out by the roots and remembering all of that is going to take a heavier toll.
Rifter
Ugh. Screw you, Nary. Nice play by Sette throwing traumatizing memories at Khette though.
