Would it surprise you to learn that until puberty, both boys and girls wear the same red school uniform? A lot of the kids that readers assume are little boys, are in fact little girls :) Lots of questions! Let's see, broadly Cresce shoots for egalitarianism. Its leadership is split between the Queen, the High Priestess, the Lord General, and the mixed council of Noble elders. It's broadly a gender-even split, and it was set up that way. I think what sets Cresce apart from our world the most is that domestic roles of service and motherhood are respected. So the women you see attending here are not valued any less than the soldiers. That was my aim with Cresce. I didn't want a society that encouraged women to be Amazonians, but a society that respected everyone's choices and supports those choices. So in short, yes, the cookie women are as respected as the guards. And there are cookie boys, too, and female guards. I really just don't fuss over making certain the gender of every single background character is unmistakable. Because Crescians don't care much about that either. But I must just not have done a very good job, haha. I never wanted to turn off more conservative readers by depicting Crescian women as dominating Crescian men all the time. I wanted to give them more familiar scenarios - like Toma and Elka - and show how advanced Crescian society is by how well those two get along and respect each other, genders be damned. Likewise, the male-heavy optics of Bell's coup is MEANT to SHOW that this part of the government is unbalanced; in disarray. The boys have formed a faction, isolating themselves from the cooperating whole. It's a sickness. Elka was eating a festive Tirnasday bowl! Meatballs, grains, greens, spicy gravy, flat bread. The Gefendur believe that Father Riv imprisons the evilest souls in a hell at the bottom of the western sea. They freeze there in the dark until the end of the world, and never reincarnate.

I'm noticing that the boy uniforms all match the soldiers, which makes sense in terms of a propagandist ‘Sacrifice yourself for your country, obedience is the way’ (like how we do here with PE and the pledge), but it's also a smidge incongruent? Like- You've claimed that the gender roles of Crescent are that men are the strong, erratic, emotional, loyal ones to contrast women's analytic, resourceful, patient, nurturant leadership, but I don’t really see that? Nearly every authoritative figure we've seen in Crescent has been a man. The mayor, the traitorous politicians— Even Bell, who was in the army, was a leader. Toma leads Elka, the women we see are in supportive roles of cooking, attendance, etcetera. If I were to go strictly by the text, I'd assume Crescent was softly patriarchal with a queen at the head. The relevance here is that the boys wear clothes as if they're in the military, that is an honoured position, do girls get similar inditement? [Double checks page before posting,] Okay, so the executioner is a woman, I'll grant that. The only servers I can spot are also women, though? Are we to believe that the people who pass out cookies are of the same or similar status as the armed guards observing from on high? Unrelatedly, what is the stuff Elka is eating? Also also, they have a concept of hell? I am curious, how does it slot into their theology? Edit: In hindsight I notice that the majourity of the grieving people who are more animated and less composed are men, whereas the women are who are keeping it together and comforting the rest. Sneaky sneaky. /positive

I'm guessing pillars of Solidity that will be dispelled to make them fall?

jaaama

What are the red poles for? Are they there to torture the hangees, or will they be lowered suddenly so they'll be hanged?
