Introducing a guy who's like 26 and telling he absolutely will die in a few years later no matter what should have prepared me more to see him die here, but it still didn't, it still hurt, made me sad. Throughout the whole story I kept thinking "he should have more time" but then his palms split and I yelled out loud "HE SHOULD HAVE MORE TIME!!!" IDK what I'm saying here. I'm rambling. You double-doomed the doomed man. I liked it.

I just spent over an hour reading through the archived final Unsounded thread on /co/ and now you post this? Not the worst way to stay up late before my work week. They're running a complete storytime of Unsounded over the coming weeks and that's the first thing I've heard in a long time that might bring me back there...

Not for the first time I've said this, but when rereading the book (and how awesome is it that it is now complete and I can read the whole damn thing with its proper flow, hot cheese 'n fucking crackers) years later, my reaction to Mathis Quigley was a major indication of the way I'd grown (or at least changed.) When I started reading in 2011, he struck me as someone whose best feature was only that he was a great example of a well-drawn "Chaotic Evil" character. A scumbag who nevertheless felt like a real person, instead of the typical rendition of that kind of character: Johnny the Homicidal Maniac without the charm. (Not that anything so crude as the alignment chart applies much to Unsounded.) But rereading in, I think like 2019? - I just pitied him. He was so broken, and so consumed by self-hatred, and the worst part, which just made me pity him more, was that a lot of that self-hatred was pretty justified considering what he did to Vienne (and Matty, ultimately.) And then when Duane just wrecked him with empathy, saying he would've done exactly the same thing - just kinda made me think, how much of what we do is just a product of our environment and experiences? I guess what I'm trying to say is "there but for the grace of God go I."

wowwww!! beautifully illustrated, and amazing composition. I'm going to miss Quigley. Even if he was an ass, his actions and reactions always felt grounded and real.
