It's definitely a balance. The Prologue was pretty heavy, so it seemed wise to ramp the fun back up a little :)

Ashley

Perhaps he's being sabotaged :3

Madison

If he really wants to be “MalLARD” instead of “MALlard” he’s really not doing himself any favors with the duck

I'm so completely smitten by the wine dark purple sea you've rendered. Primo color choices throughout these panels! My eyeballs are slurping it up!

And then a duck for good measure.

Krak-a-NOM

Awww, I'm glad they survived! And it's good to have things turn out different degrees of horrible, keeps us on our toes. ;-P Also, I guess touching the 'mast' didn't really make difference, it would have activated anyway. Neat duck!

Alight

You got sentimental? You made it explicit that they might yet live? Right after the prologue? Wow, this is going to be a decidedly different book from Unsounded. /hj (Explanation: I recall you mentioning that you had considered letting the wandering root regrow, decided that'd be out of tone for the book, and then have Duane burn it instead.)

True enough! Current news headlines also have me feeling maudlin though, haha x_x I'm glad this chapter is mostly light and fun.

See, this is more intriguing than wholesale slaughter, because it adds a real cheeky air to whatever this Captain Mallard is about. And good to know we can sometimes barter for the lives of fleeting comic appearances with our commentary! Like blowing hopefully on the dice behind the scenes, even if events are still beholden to the True Storymaster ;)

Luuuuuuu

Never a more elegant master of land, sea, air, and the very depths themselves~

Rainwalker

i know its a hat but i am actively choosing to see the duck as rocking one hell of a pompadour

LordOfChains

The panel said ‘KRAK’, but my mind replaced it with ‘NOM’

Y'know, I'm glad they survived. It makes the rubber duck calling card even better here, 'cause Captain Mallard didn't have to kill them to loot 'em. It shows how fearsome he is, that he's strong enough to just chomp down a ship, loot 'em, toss out a rubber duck, and be on his way. It's like when you take candy from a baby. You don't gotta punch the baby to take their lolly. You just snag the lolly and stroll off whistling to the tune of Isabel Ne'er Do Well. (I am not actually an expert on stealing candy from babies, that's Sette's department)
