It's definitely a task that Darkest is suited for. Many of the Black Tongues are not personable men - they are monomaniacal intellectuals - and do not care for public speaking. I think Darkest is enjoying the task and overall enjoying the attention, so he doesn't see it as a punishment :)

I had kind of assumed this was a standard part of being a Black Tongue. Have the new guy introduce himself to the patrons, and communicate some sort of understanding of what the Black Tongues are all about. Having to play this particular part is maybe good for imparting a sense of purpose and humility or something like that? The patrons seem to be offering him their full attention in spite of him being unimpressive and the fact that he's maybe not saying anything they haven't heard before. Also having to talk at a fundraiser seems like the kind of work you'd give to the new guy
