Verse 6 Afterword

Comments

Thank you for reading and commenting. I doubt anything I could say now will sway your mind on this and I must admit I don't have the excess energy to argue. But maybe in a few years, once the initial rush of emotion has passed, you'll read the story and my comment again and will see things in a different light. And maybe hopefully you'll find new depth and enjoyment in the tale then.

I know this comment is super late but I’ve just binged verse 6 and must say it was a fine piece of writing. The lows and highs hit really well and I felt compelled to finish the whole thing in one day. That being said I felt a lot of the things you mentioned in this afterword. I did not like Yule during this story. To me she felt preachy while other people die around her. Yule’s people died and she never got mad about it. In my view if you can forgive any wrong then did you really truly care? When Yule was first kidnapped over 100 loyal citizens died. From that point on the pirates, dragon and prince had no redeeming qualities. The fact the prince never gets punished for those deaths is criminal. You cannot ask me to sympathize with unjustified mass murder. There was no way for me to make the sinking of Yule’s ship okay. On the pirates of this story, they were clearly murderers, rapist, and slavers. Again I could not come to like those people just because they have a wife at home. These were not treasure seeking ruin looters, but criminals that raid villages, ransom people and steal from merchants, none of that is cool. I know a big part of this series has always been the “bad guy” might not be a BAD guy but here in this story the bad guys (pirates) are clearly bad, so from the moment Yule’s ship sank all the pirates became terrorist. Then later with Iris and the slaver plot line they just became worse. You mentioned courtesans in the brothel but as tragic as their plight is they are part of that slave system to the point they defend it with violence so I do not feel bad when they die as sad as it is. And Yule X Sai-Lin, knowing how Izumi feels about Yule, reading that just didn’t feel good. Really want to see how Izumi would feel after learning those two shacked up. Not everything in this verse was fun but all of it was interesting and got strong emotional responses from me which is enjoyable in its own way. Like I said I know this comment is super late but as one of the readers that wanted the prince dead, the dragon heart rewarded to Izumi and the pirates to walk the plank; in my view the pirates were undeniably chaotic evil and with the prince and dragon going unpunished felt bad, the Thefasos got no justice.

Thank you for reading! You've run a real marathon, and I'm glad you did. Hope you also enjoy the side stories here. And you have my respect for remembering Sai-Lin!

...Having binged all six books over the course of a week (yes, really) I've enjoyed what I read. I am very sorry not all have. For what it is, Sai Lin went from (I hear an Ojou laugh there) to (I really hope given the ambiguity as a character we'll have reason to revisit the Ojou laugh) and no good story is black and white. The breaks from tropes have been excellent, and if anything the characters have become more endearing as the story has continued. I'm going to go google an Ojou Laugh Video collection now....o~hohoho

Finally, regarding the Prince. Commenters really hated him lol. But I frankly don't see his actions as needing justification. He tolerated Greystrode though he knew the man wicked, yeah. But cut off the hydra's head, and three more will take its place. Instead of one solid pyramid of evil with an obvious entrance, you'd face countless scattered pockets of villainy, beyond anyone's control. Only wide-scale military action could unravel the whole web, or years of tedious detective work. He prioritized dealing with the Empire in a situation where he couldn't really be picky with his allies. The enemy of my enemy, and so on...The Prince condemned himself for this choice and thought to make up for it with his life. But I think the better end is to have him work for his redemption, alongside the rest.

As for your points, in matters of opinions I have no say, really. Liking or disliking a character isn't something I even try to influence, it's none of my business. I'm not personally all that fond of Yuliana either, but as a character of clear goals and strong opinions/emotions, she catalyses interesting situations and this makes her interesting to me from the writing POV. You could say, I enjoy bullying her (joke). But, I do think many of her arguments fly over the readers' heads and they give her a little less credit than she deserves. But that's out of my hands, again. Going on, I saw no reason to exaggerate Izumi's antics any further. That's not the kind of drama this story needed. I think it's too obvious for words that when a person dies, there'll be family and friends to miss them. No one lives in perfect isolation. Izumi monologues about this herself in the earlier chapter. What is innocence? Sai-Lin certainly deserved what she got, but in the end, she was only another slave. If abandoned to her fate, Iris might well have grown up as her successor. But what was the merchant's sin? What bad did the courtesans of Crimson Lotus do to anyone? Their job was to entertain people. None of the destruction was necessary. Izumi could have simply taken Iris and moved somewhere else. She didn't, because there's a part of her that pulls her towards violence. I found these heartachingly tragic scenes, but whether the reader sees the same or not is up to them, I prefer subtlety.

Thank you for your comment! Conversation is always welcome, of course. I avoid replying on RR, because if I started to explain things to one user, then, in the name of fairness, I should do the same for everyone. And I fear there'd be no end to it. I'd rather have the readers there think about things among themselves. But this is a different venue, patrons pay for my work and have the right to all answers, naturally. I'll split the comment, since it seems there is no way to put paragraph breaks in replies here...

Very interesting. May I add some insight? For your point on the Prince, to me I dont actually want him to suffer a painful death, but for him to understand why Izumi arrived. Why she fought the dragon tooth and nail for. It felt like he never actually understood what he did wrong - which was to either turn a blind eye to Greystrode's criminal arrives or remain naive about it. Yuliana...it has been how many books since we last saw her? She suffers from not being charismatic enough compared to Izumi. She talks a big game but all I can do is feel sorry for her due to her condition. For Izumi and her crimes, to me it is probably because you didn't really write in-depth how she ruined the lives of the civilians around her. Instead, you let us see Iris who in a way, is a symbol of Izumi's and the reader's justification as to why all that destruction was necessary. I dare say you should've added a scene where someone curses Izumi for destroying the syndicate. Someone completely innocent. Sai Lin wont cut it unfortunately. These are just my several cents. I really enjoyed the story, but readers are always going to have different reactions to each book. Wish I could put paragraphs while typing on phone but it wont let me.
