🕑 Added 2025-04-11 22:08:27 +0000 UTCFrom the very beginning, I was immediately pulled into this story's world of intrigue, magic, and quiet intensity. The way that it all unfolded, layer by layer, kept me questioning what was real and what was mere illusion right up until the final moments! It was one of those rare films that knows how to hold all of its secrets close, giving just enough to keep you hooked in while always staying ahead. When the truth was finally revealed, it felt like everything just clicked in the most satisfying way.

It was amusing to see you as spooked by the illusions as the audience in the film. It's also amazing the lengths Eisenheim had to go to for Sophie and him to be together. That's what comes of such a power imbalance in a classist social hierarchy. I don't feel bad for the prince at all; he allegedly murdered previous women he was involved with and had the power to cover it up. It was almost public knowledge but again he had so much power it would be nothing more than rumour and hearsay. The real trick was pitting the inspector against the prince. In spite of his confessed corruption, the inspector was just as aware of the class divide as anyone else. And although he was just as curious as the Prince as to how Eisenheim engineered his illusions (arguably more so) his ego was never damaged for not being able to work everything out - unlike the Prince. Eisenheim planted enough evidence for the inspector's inquisitive mind to follow - I'm not sure the plan would have worked of the inspector wasn't as logic driven as he is. What I also loved about this movie was the slight sepia filter and use of light. Almost like we were watching a film of events being played back (in some ways we were as this movie is narrated by the inspector from his recollection). So I could argue that the realism of the illusions is because we're seeing them from his perspective, which has never experienced that level of sophistication before.

I love watching magicians and illusionist. The last one I saw was Criss Angel in Vegas. It was pretty awesome! Anyway, this was a good movie. It's one of my favorites and I enjoyed watching your reaction to it. I think you'll also enjoy watching The Prestige (2006).
