🕑 Added 2025-05-25 18:00:09 +0000 UTCI think I'm still sitting with the beautiful weight of this and will be for a while. This film was so much more than I expected. it felt like being gently cracked open in the most honest, necessary way. It was beautiful, aching, and deeply moving.
Coming from a broken family myself, there were moments that felt like someone had put my story, and my mother's and maybe even my daughter's future, up on the screen. The generational trauma, the silence, the crouching tiger waiting for her daughter in the shadows, hit so close to home. And through that, I felt this quiet, steady call to do better. Be better. Be softer. Be stronger. To break the cycles for my daughter and for myself. I absolutely loved this film for that.
Watching this with the knowledge that this film means so much to Andy made it even more special. Knowing some of his background, and why this was the story he wanted to share with me gave the whole experience an extra layer of care going in. So Andy, thank you so much for using your movie ticket on this one. You couldn't have picked a more powerful introduction.
The cultural and emotional depth fo this film is honestly hard to put into words. It holds so much pain, resilience, sacrifice, and beauty. Every woman's story felt like its own world, layered and full of grief and grace. Visually, it was stunning. The colors, the transitions between generations and the expressions. It was all done so beautifully like a book of memories just waiting to be explored and learned from.
This was a reminder that healing is possible. That love can be complicated and sharp but still be real. That even when we come from a fractured place, we can choose a different way forward.
I'm holding this one close.

I'm so glad you got as much out of it as you did, Maz. I always like to say before there was Crazy Rich Asians, there was The Joy Luck Club. And I understand there is likely a Joy Luck Club 2 in the near future, with the original surviving cast to return and a screenplay by original novelist Amy Tan that everyone loves. I highly recommend the novel as well, if you're interested (still proud to have my first edition). "Dark roots that have spawned from seeds planted against our will taking hold" - you have a lovely way with words, my friend. And I agree. The Movie Tickets have been awesome. Great choices by all, and Gardens of Stone and Gifted were both first time watches for me, too. I'm very much looking forward to the next time they become available. Wow. Where to even start. This was my first time watching (or even hearing of) this movie, and what a journey it was for me. One that was, like yours, deeply personal. And I found a lot of it very uncomfortable to watch, because of my own history, which I've talked about before. But not a bad uncomfortable. Because we sometimes need stories like these to unlock that door and reflect on things that we have tucked away to avoid thinking about. To use stories like this as a reminder of our growth, and of our continued path ahead. From the opening words, I got a feel of what I was going to be in for, and was so invested through the whole thing I have so much I want to say, and reflect on each story told through this movie, that I'm left searching for a concise way to lay it all out. So I think I'll narrow it down into one central theme: Realization. Reflecting on the parents in this movie, and the daughters, our own families, and even ourselves; there's so many parts of our lives that we're living on autopilot because of the conditioning of our pasts or from those around us. Those dark roots that have spawned from seeds planted against our will taking hold. But the moment we realize is the moment we begin to heal. And begin purging that darkness from our minds. It isn't always perfect, and we have our ups and downs still, like you said in the outro, but it's the start of the path that leads us to a brighter place Thank you Andy for this pick! And like so many other movie tickets too, for introducing me to a movie that I likely wouldn't have otherwise watched. This is one that'll stick with me, and definitely get a rewatch in the future since there's still so much to think on
