After seeing how emotional it was, I'm so glad I decided not to record this while I was super exhausted last night. I don't think I stopped crying the entire episode. And not the slow tear kind, the bull-body, ugly cry kind. Shew.
This episode felt a bit like being hit by a tidal wave. It was the way that everything we've been walking through came full circle. And so many themes that have always been simmering just beneath the surface finally boiled over. The cycle of violence, the cost of vengeance, the power of love, and what it means to protect someone even when it breaks you and the world around you. It was all here.
Joel's love for Ellie has always been beautiful, fierce, flawed, and incredibly human. And this episode showcased that. It felt so raw watching him try to hold it all together, trying to be strong for her when he's clearly unraveling inside. I kept thinking... He never wanted her to carry this kind of pain. And yet here they are, both carrying more than ever.
There was a crushing inevitability to it all. Especially with an opening scene like that with Joel and Tommy's father. I think that's why it made this episode hit so hard. Because as much as I wanted peace, I knew the weight they both carry. I knew it was going to collapse, and Joel would feel like a failure.
This episode didn't' just continue the story- it honored every single thing that came before it. It showed us that love can be both a lifeline and a curse. Even when you try to break the cycle, sometimes it breaks you instead.

I've just realised - if New Year's Eve was 9 months after Ellie's 19th Birthday, and she left with Dina a couple of months later, Ellie must be on the verge of her 20th birthday in Seattle... 😭

The harshest thing is that was literally the night before Joel was murdered. He confessed out of Love, and was prepared for her to hate him forever. Pascal's face was devastating. The big cycle "do a little bit better than me" was terrible going from a father who seriously nearly killed his own child, to a father who used a belt, to Joel just being angry...It was rough. Also, I recommend re-watching episode 2 of this Season. Right after this. It hurts like Ellie says "but good". Also, they drag Eugene back to town the exact way Joel was dragged back. Apropos?

The opening conversation between Joel and his dad was uncomfortably real. Even if each cycle of abuse & violence diminishes in severity, is it really an improvement if it's still a cycle? The trauma of physical hurt shifts to mental and emotional, of which there are many states. When they were at their happiest was seemingly when they knew eachother the best. But Joel's unaddressed secret caused the schism that only grew wider with time. As a result, they drifted in knowing eachother and the worse it got. Sometimes silence is violence.
