There's so much to say about this movie. I didn't read all the comments, so some of this may be a repeat. The movie was already written and filmed in the 50s. It's called "Zero Hour". Here's a short side by side comparison of the two. All Airplane! did was add the gags and jokes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8-v2BHNBVCs&t=27s What gives this movie so much punch is that most of the stars were no-nonsense, tough guys that were always in dramas. Lloyd Bridges is best known as Stan Nelson in Sea Hunt. That's why Stack asks him occasionally, "Got a cigarette, Nels?" Robert Stack is best known as Elliot Ness in the series The Untouchables. Peter Graves is James Arness' brother. Arness played The Thing in the 1951 movie, and played over 20 seasons as Matt Dillion on the series Gunsmoke. Peter Graves was in 50s B Sci Fi and Horror movies like "It Conquered The World," and played the main man on the series Mission Impossible. Leslie Nielson was a character actor that was always the "heavy" or bad guy. If you look back at the third season of Kung Fu in the 70s, he was a bad bad bad villain. Airplane was all of those actors' first comedy. That's why the people were amazed to see their tough guys being funny. I read where the plane running into the airport window was a $40,000 gag (including the mock plane). The longest running gag in the move that no one seems to get is that jet planes don't have propellers!!! Nobody seem to notice that. Listen to it again, especially when it shows the airplane from outside. But I will give you credit for being one of the few that caught the fact that Kramer walked through the mirror. Most miss that. And you caught the Mayo at the clinic. Most people zoom in on the heart. They had to go through all of that for that one punchline, "Give me Hamm on 5, hold the Mayo." But they weren't afraid to pick low hanging fruit, either. We have clearance Clarence, Roger Roger, What's our vector Victor? You are one of the few that picked up on the train platform as the train was leaving. And yes, that was a 60s and 70s type credit card impression maker. It had paper and carbon paper, and you got a receipt, the gas station got a copy, and they sent a copy off to the company. I've used one many times. I have learned that there is a "rule of 3" in comedy. And they followed it nearly every time. Striker threw his hat and it came back, he threw his coat and it came back, he threw the girl and she came back. Three people killed themselves listing to his story. The Dr told them good luck, we 're all counting on you three times. There were three "what is it" jokes (headquarters, hospital, and cockpit). The only time I counted 4 was the things that McCrosky picked a bad week to quit (smoking, drinking, drugs, and glue). There's more, but that's enough for now. I hope you read something new here. I think some of the jokes in this movie... especially the ones with the captain and the little kid... are the kind of jokes that are supposed to be funny BECAUSE they're really outrageously inappropriate. But I do think that people are less likely to feel comfortable with jokes that go in that specific direction these days. I think a lot of people didn't care for it much at the time, either. But if you want movies with a similar madcap comedy style: Top Secret! Airplane 2: The Sequel The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad! (same director, lead character is played by Leslie Nielsen, who played the doctor in this one. The Naked Gun 2 & 1/2: The Smell of Fear The Naked Gun 33 & 1/3: The Final Insult The Naked Gun has also got a remake coming out soon starring Liam Neeson

it's another older comedy but i think YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN is the best comedy ever made. Gene Wilder and Marty Feldman say or do something funny every second they're on screen.
