Battlestar Galactica | S2 E15: Scar & E16: Sacrifice | Full Reaction
🕑 Added 2025-08-21 13:00:11 +0000 UTCIn a really beautiful and twisty way, these episodes went hand in hand and showcased how people deal with a War that has no end in sight. Episode 15 was a deep dive into Starbuck's journey. It was messy, raw, and deeply human. She's caught between self-destruction and survival. Numbing herself with booze and still wanting to protect her people. And her rivalry with Kat hit me hard, too. It wasn't just about who could get that kill, but about what legacy looks like and who gets to be remembered vs. forgotten.
By the end of Episode 15, I was shaken but genuinely proud of Starbuck. She took her flaws and self-doubt and stared them in the face. She showed restraint, gave Kat her moment, and still came away from it with a quiet strength that I can't help but love her for. But I think what shook me the most was that her victory and character shift didn't feel triumphant. Not really. It was just another day in an endless war. Another scar added to the fleet's soul.
Then we jumped into Episode 16. Sacrifice. I know Battlestar Galactica pretty well by now and with a title like that, I knew I had to be nervous. On the surface, this was a hostage situation episode. But underneath that it was truly about grief, anger, and how fragile the fleet is when people start to lose hope in a never-ending war. Sounds familiar, huh.
Sesha wasn't just another 'villain of the week'. She was grieving, scared, and full of rage. She carries a pain that so many civilians are also feeling. And to her (and probably others), keeping Sharon alive looks like straight up betrayal.
Once again, Battlestar Galactica shows us that survival isn't just about fighting the good fight with Cylons. It's about wrestling the despair that eats away from within. The despair that's been coming at the entire fleet for so long. Too long. And even though that despair and grief connect them, it also makes them feel more alone. Like each person is walking through pain that nobody can truly take away. This episode made me realize that being together in grief isn't comforting. It just intensifies the isolation. And that's a terrifying, heartbreaking thought.

A note about Black Market… when the series first came out, I hated it. It was my least favorite episode of the entire series. But upon further viewings of the entire series, I like it more and more each time. It gives a much-needed look behind the main scenes at the nitty gritty life most people in the fleet are living. It also gives some humanizing background to Lee and why he’s the way he is. I find myself wishing for more episodes like this, once I’m past the bigger events of the main plot line. I like getting the little details of life in BSG that are beyond our main story. Second, I really love and support your two-episode viewing schedule for this series. It gets us through a larger chunk each week, and it helps to even out the series because if you get a sad episode, often the second one viewed will cancel it out and make things positive again. I fully support you in the two-episode format and I wish others did it more. 😊

It's nice to be caught up with BSG so that my comments aren't weeks old... Episode 15 - Scar When Apollo was talking about not being able to remember the faces of the dead Viper pilots, I was reminded of the Band of Brothers episode Replacements. The veterans showed the same sorrow about the youngsters whom they would get to know, only to see them killed. Starbuck's roll call of the fallen pilots was...? I'm struggling to find the word. Katee Sackhoff's acting was superb, but the situation itself was such a strange combination of victory and defeat. It was triumphant and yet tragic, poignant and bittersweet. "So say we all." I'm glad they ended the episode with Starbuck and Helo. He's the only human with shared experience who can understand Starbuck's struggles with the situation on Caprica. Episode 16 - Sacrifice It was such a delight to see Dana Delaney! I've never watched any of the series in which she starred, but I know her mostly from guest roles on shows such as Castle. As you said, Kali, the episode title often says it all. Once we saw Billy notice the second pistol in the shooter's belt, I suspected that he would be the one to sacrifice himself, ironically to save Dee for Lee. I would have much preferred Ellen to be the sacrifice, but I'm pretty sure that she wouldn't risk her life for anyone, even Saul. I also knew that there was no way they would give up the Cylon child. The series has invested too much intellectual capital in that story, with the futures of Helo, Boomer, Baltar, and Number Six all tied to the child. I also loved Roslin's scene with Billy's body in the morgue. I first fell in love with Mary McDonnell as an actress in Dances With Wolves, and her performances in BSG have been more of the same excellence.

To beat the dead horse one final time, during my own watch recently, Black Market had put me off so much that I took a couple week break from watching episodes on my own time to stay ahead of you LOL. I thought - ya know, maybe I'll just wait and start doing first time watches with your reactions. But then seeing you watch through earlier parts of this season re-energized me and I got back on. I say all this because these two episodes were what I came back to. And I loved both of them so much that I've been foot on the gas ever since and am now like a third of the way through season 3! These two episodes really capture so much of what BSG has been about. It's not just the fight against the Cylons, and survival. It's the mental cost along the way. And how different that looks for each. Scar especially, and the deep look into Starbuck's mental state was so powerful. And I really loved your analysis of her, comparing how she feels inside to how she gets perceived

Can i just say without anyone getting mad that I was relieved to have a couple episodes without Baltar and that robot lady that's constantly licking and petting him? Those two make my skin crawl...
